Tux Dolls? 21

Embedded asks: "So has anyone (preferably GUND) brought out a TUX yet?" I'm sure someone has thought of this. Who's got them? I'd love to have a stuffed version like the icon in the upper right!

Tux Dolls?

I picked a pretty faithful replica up at a swap meet a few months ago. Go to http://www.waiyiptoys.com/factory.htm
  • I have one, and so have a few of my friends. We bought them last year - well, one of my friend bought them all, we we purchased them from him. They are quite excellent. Don't know where he got them though - I think it was in association with ILUG (Irish LUG). We also got Tux Stickers, the same size as the little square stickers on some PCs - you take off the 'designed for Windows 98/NT' sticker and put your TUX on instead. Eircom in Ireland have these stickers all over their Linux boxes. So so cool looking.

  • And for some proof, have a look here [redbrick.dcu.ie] for a picture of a desk being swarmed in Tux Dolls...

  • I bought one of the 10" Tux's and I have to say it's pretty darn close to the Ewing version. The body (especially the head) is a little elongated. It was still obvious to my coworkers who the penguin was, and that's really what matters isn't it.
I found that the smaller ones are rather distorted but the 10" is pretty well done.
  • SuSE Sells stuffed penguins too...

They even sell their stuffed chameleon logo...

Check the german site (.de) as the US one doesn't seem to sell stuffed material...

  • LinuxIt [linuxit.com] has a six inch stuffed TUX for sale. Also when I was in Cupertino last year, Fry's had several different Tuxs. Where can I get a stuffed Mozilla?
  • But I love fuzzies! I got me:
    • A Bubbles [cartoonnetwork.com] Powerpuff Girl Bean Bag
    • A Tinky Winky (The gay one) Tellytubby (it was a gift)
    • A Bela Fleck & the Flectones [flecktones.com] Cosmic Hippo
    • A 12" tall Eric Cartman (he's so cuddly)
    • And although he's not stuffed, I got a H.M. Murdock action figure!! (from the A-Team!!!)

I want to get a stuffed Tux as well as a BSDemon.

And yes, I am a guy. BTW, you should see a couple of my friend's rooms, they are filled with stuffed animals. It's really just a matter of being a big softie. Being a big softie is not mutually exclusive with being a geek. :-)

A wealthy eccentric who marches to the beat of a different drum. But you may call me "Noodle Noggin."

  • My friend got one for me at the WB store. I tried to get one for my girlfriend, but they were out of stock B4 christmas, so i had to settle for a tshirt. If your WB studio store is out of stock, you can try the online store. follow the link from www.wb.com

  • Leibscher & Partner [freibergnet.de] sells BSD plush daemons [freibergnet.de], among other things such as mousepads and coffee mugs. Check it out if you're interested.

  • Most of the geeks I know aren't big on stuffed animals. Would there be a market for this? I don't know. Novelties are plenty cool, but not the best business proposition.

Someone will do it, though. If the name "Linux" can send a stock up 900% or whatever, it might be able to sell a few stuffed penguins.

  • If I could find one, I'd buy it. Thought there was one on the web a while back but haven't seen it since.

  • Think geek (who always advertise on /. sell them at http//www.thinkgeek.com click on other stuff on the right, they have the best selection of "geek" T-Shirts etc I have seen also.

    Lynk

    P.S. I don't work for them either.
  • I personally have a very nice ceramic penguin I got at one of those "paint it yourself" ceramics places. I made it years ago, before I'd ever wanted a ceramic Tux, but when I found it in a box in the garage three months ago, I saw the likeness immediately.
  • I thought there were several mall-like linux vendors that sold them. I don't remember where I
got my 6" Tux from, but it looks cool sitting on top of my speakers. As if that (and the "powered by linux" stickers on my case) doesn't make a statement when I have friends over at my house, I serve drinks with penguin ice cubes. I bought the penguin tray from (I think) Target and it always seems to bring up the "oh, how cute" statements. :)

  • Well, stuffed animals are available - Suse has them, for example at http://www.suse.de/de/produkte/merchandising/pingu in/
  • I realize I'm going to sound like a fanatic, but really, I didn't mean for any of this to happen...

First, I have an Opus stuffed doll from way back. Remove the tie and it looks a little like Tux (actually better).

Then my wife got (from her parents) some flannel pajamas with little penguins all over.

Then my wife bought little penguin socks for my one-year-old.

To paraphrase Robert Benchley: "I'm penguin poor, I have so many".

  • As somebody else pointed out, Linux Mall has them in tons of sizes.

What I have is the little Corel Linux rubber Tux that came with Corel Linux Deluxe. It looks much better than the plush ones (the proportions seem all wrong, especially on the bill).

I squish him whilst thinking a lot. My friend's GF loves the little thing and asks him to buy her one every time she sees it. I found that funny since that was the original intention. She hasn't said, "he must be stuffed with herring," yet. :-)*

I wonder now if there's a way to get one of these rubber Tuxes without paying CAN$100 for Corel Linux Deluxe. Anybody know?
  • But I love fuzzies! I got me:

A Bubbles Powerpuff Girl Bean Bag

Oh, please, tell me where you found this!! Bubbles is the BEST! I've only seen them on ebay, for ridiculous prices. I figured the Warner Bros. store near me would have them, but no luck. -_-

-Monaco (who's searching for the perfect Vejiita (Dragonball) plush!)

  • Their website is The Penguin Place [penguin-place.com]
and their toll free number is 1-(877)PENG-WIN

They claim to be "the only all-penguin outlets in the world." and have been in business for 15 years.

They have at least one brick-and-mortar store called 'Next Stop, South Pole' (which I have been to) located at in the HarborPlace shoping complex in Baltimore. Curiosly, when I went in there, the day manager hadn't heard of Linux.

Anyway, you can actually choose your stuffed penguin by species. I hope they add the Fairy Penguins from Australia that were mentioned on /. recently.

The Linux Mall [linuxmall.com] has a solution.. There are an assortment of sizes, and a costume available.. Admittedly, they're not exact replicas of the Ewing Tux, but they are better than nothing. I do have a stuffed pengiun myself, but through other sources (a Hallmark store).

    Methinks Slashdot needs a knowledge-mining FAQ ;)
