X11 on BeOS? 11

ilkahn asks: "I have started playing around with BeOS and I think it is an amazing client OS, with amazing speed, and great usability. I would be very interested in migrating some of the boxes I have to BeOS on the client side, however there is one major roadblock standing in my way. Most of the applications that I use on a day-to-day basis require an X server for their display, and I have found no way to display X applications inside of Be. Does anyone know of any X servers or any way of displaying X apps in Be?"

If you search for BeWine, you will find a port of X11R6.3 and X11R6.4 for BeOS (bewine.loungenet.net or something like that).

You can also check out GeekGadges, at http://www.ninemoons.com - I think they're the ones porting X...

Also look on bebits.com, they're the 'freshmeat.net' of the BeOS world :)

    Cheers,
    Patrix.

I know that there is a VNC viewer that runs under BeOS, so in the very least you can use that to display X stuff from another box (as well as stuff from many other OSes too...)
  • A port of a window manager with Be-style window decorations?

In addition to the sheer joy of doing something pointless, this leads to a variety of charming practical jokes. Set up a Be system with a Be-style WM running under X, and watch people struggle with a nearly-correct interface. :)
  • I have seen an X11 subsystem for BeOS. Dig around a bit on the Be website or on one o fthe Be info sites.

  • The port of X11R6.4 is avail here [bebits.com] on the bebits.com website. There's also an article [benews.com] about running X services under BeOS over on BeNews.

  • If you're looking for some X window managers that have been compiled on BeOS then check out my web site at www.smaug.co.uk [smaug.co.uk]. There's AmiWM, MLVWM and Blackbox available.
  • You can find VNC, which is under the GPL, here:

The project that is trying to get WINE running on BeOS has, I believe, gotten X running. You can check out their web site here [loungenet.org].

  • There's also a port of several window managers. Blackbox has been ported somewhere, and the Enlightenment port is here [sourceforge.net].

Grab the package from here [loungenet.org]. It will be installed by Software Valet and it will change the .profile. From a new terminal fire the command "Xbeos -ac". It would start the xserver and take up the whole screen and the BeOS desktop is no longer viewable. Alt-F[1-12] for a different workspace. Start another terminal and do an "fvwm &" and an "xterm &". Now Alt-F[1-12] to the xserver workspace and voila! the xterm is there alright. Telnet into your linux machines and export any displays, including netscape, gnorpm etc. over - welcome to BeOS!
  • WeirdX really isn't really that good of an option. Last I checked there were still quite a few projects on brining a goof JVM to Be, there's the BeKaffe project that's getting close and Be is also working with Sun.
