What Ever Happened to Microsoft's Solo2 Chip? 8

flipper28 asks: "I remember reading about Microsoft's forthcoming Solo2 chip over a year ago. Does anyone know what happened to it? Did it end up in UltimateTV, Xbox, or did it take the route of Microsoft Bob?" I've honestly never heard of such a thing. Anyone have a clue as to whether the Solo2 has become the latest in Microsoft's line of vapourware?

  • The only thing found on Microsoft's website containint Solo2 is the "Schweizer 2-32 Sailplane Performance Specifications" for Flight Simulator 4 ;)
  • I don't know about the other systems, but the XBox is based on a P3-733. I can't really see them producing a CPU, considering all the options available (AMD, Intel, Cyrix, Transmeta...)

Microsoft canceled the project because it didn't fit with the .Net model. Microsoft couldn't figure out a way to yank a piece of hardware if you decided not to renew your subscription. Maybe when Star Trek Transporter technology becomes a reality will see it again.

  • I believe it made it into Ultimate TV with its ability two run two separate encode streams.
