The Duke of URL is RIP; Now what?

Michael Stutz asks: "The Duke of URL announced today that he's closing up shop. His site was, I think, the best for getting a handle on seeing what new hardware worked well with Linux, with lots of smart reviews and links to deals. Better than any hardware database I've seen, the Duke of URL offered opinions based on personal experience and knowledge. Not having time to try out and tinker with all the latest myself, it was good to check out his latest Linux Buyer's Guide and see what came recommended as not only working with Linux but working well with Linux -- it was kind of like the old "Alice & Bill" column in Computer Shopper magazine, except for users of Linux and Open Source software. So now where to go to get good recommendations on hardware that works well with free software?"

Any way to get archives?

If archives were available, say on CD- or DVD-ROM, that would be nice. Even for $$$, naturally.

I believe the Duke of URL site was going to be archived for some time. Sounded like the dude who owned the site realized that people would still want to access the content even after the site was dead.

Part of the appeal of Duke of URL is that Patrick Mullen is a largely unbiased amatuer with a website. If you miss this service enough, why not provide it yourself? I'm sure that a serious inquiry by e-mail to Patrick would result in a response - It would be nice to have the benefit of his experience when starting your own site!

It is definitely too bad that the site had to close down. I think that it would be good to have a site where someone can devote time to reviewing software and hardware.

Unfortunately, knowledge, research and experimentation cost money. Perhaps a site should start charging users for the opportunity to make use of the information.

There ain't no such thing as a free lunch. From the web site's main page, I get the impression that the people running the site are the ones who paid for it.

They are, and several of their review links have benn to (surprise) The Duke... though there is a nice increase in other sites. Check 'em out!

site features :

a quite considerable database of printers and their suitability to printing under linux,

general discussion of each vendor's track record and present level of support of free software compatability,

good information on th various ways to get printing happening under linux,

and more...

Let somebody else do it?

Why don't people in this situation pass the site along to somebody else? Many rely on the site for information, so I'm sure one of those should be able to take the role of webmaster. It is a shame that a site has to close down because a person wants to live his life(I'm not saying anything is wrong with living his life, though).
