SSH Clients for Palm OS 5? 28

oosid asks: "I have recently upgraded my Sony Clie T-616 to an NX-60 with the built in keyboard, larger screen, and a WI-FI card. I have been searching for a good terminal emulator/ssh client and have found nothing worthy. Am I totally missing something, or is there really nothing out there? It would be awesome to be able to take advantage of the excellent screen and keyboard in my favorite wireless coffee shop."

    It's a kind of shitty question.

    One suspects it's more of an advert
    • If it was an advert for PalmOS 5 one would think they would mention both the Tungsten T and Toungsten C.

      They woudl probobly point out that the Tungsten T has built in bluetooth, PalmOS 5.0, 16MB of memory, and a slick compact size that expands to full size when you need to use the graffiti area.

      If it was the Tungsten C they were advertising they would mention the thumboard, 64MB of RAM(!) and built in 802.11b(!) which would be perfect for use from a SSH client. The Sony NX series only gets Wi-Fi from a t
      • unless they are just trying to get someone to code this app for them and open source it, in which case they only need to make it sound cool, not add the extra marketing hype.

  • Am I alone in feeling that lately slashdot has turned into a personalized search engine. I feel like I'm visiting that old miningco search engine that let you ask real questions and people would look it up for you.

    • No, I feel the same way. I'm sure a lot of others do, considering how half of the posts we see in the Ask Slashdots today are full of "try google retard!" It wouldn't seem that far out for a /. editor to spend the 3 seconds to do so (google for palmos ssh client) that the poster didn't, and reject based on the ease of which something would be found.

      Or, there might be more of an agenda here. Perhaps the editor which posted this is a Zaurus user, and figured a lot of people would be like "H4h4 my Z can doo
    • yes, I do as well, I've seen several in recent times. Honestly, editors, since you are checking these, if you can do "palmOS ssh" in google and turn up the answer, you should not be posting these. It's sad. Many of us have the hacker attitude of "learn it yourself"

    I used to have a Nokia 9210 which had a Mocha telnet client that worked great for remote maintenance. I could do simple maintenance stuff whil on holiday.

    I now have a Clie TG50 which is a great little tool with keyboard, color, bluetooth and all. I am very disappointed by the SSH software available too.

    Mocha telnet for the Palm just crashes and Topgun SSH, well... The terminal emulator just sucks. Try to use vi on it!

    I would have expected the popularity of the Palm platform to lead to a lot of good Ssh apps, but this doesn't seem to be the case so far.

    Yeah, I know I should write one myself...

      Login to your server with TGSSH, and then type 'screen'

      It will be a world of difference.

      Depending on what your doing, it might also help to add a TGSSH termcap entry.
      • I have screen loaded from my bash profile, it makes no difference really.

        Have you used TGssh? It's not as if you have a command line or anything. You get an input box to type your stuff in. So arrow-up and tab-completion (just what you need on a handheld) don't even work. It's one very weird application.

          Yes, I have a palm Vx and a omnisky wireless modem with service from AT&T. Tab completeion works, you just have to send the partial letters and the tab, and not a carrige return. I've repaired mail servers without going indoors using only TGSSH.

    If you want a mini computer, get a Zaurus. It has a real OS, real memory management, and under active open source development. debian-arm packages install just fine. With OpenZaurus, you get the latest ssh, media player, etc apps, on a color, backlit screen, etc. etc. Sounds like you have the wrong tool - how are you going to type?
  • is that it's still not a real multitasking os. The new clie's especially have a fairly significant amout of resources, yet when you switch back and forth between applications connections go away and so forth... it's about as useful as having a dos box with a tcp-stack...

    I hear palmos 5.2 will address this, but it's pushing me towards the sharp zaurus units even though I currently have a clie nx60

  • When I first got my Tungsten T I wanted a good telnet/SSH app but couldn't find one. All I could find was MochaTelnet, ptelnet, and TGSSH, all of which either were incompatible with OS5, weren't compatible with SSH2, or just had such ugly fonts that I couldn't see what I was doing.

    Then I found this program:

    • Ack. My Bad. It supports direct serial and telnet, not SSH. Still, it's the best I have found. I also use it to connect to my own machine dialup with PPP, so I don't care about SSH since I'm not all that worried about someone hijacking my CSD GSM connection. If only I could get GPRS in all areas...
