What Does a Software Tester's Job Constitute? 228
First time accepted submitter rolakyng writes "I got a call from a recruiter looking for software test engineer. I'm a software engineer and my job is development and testing. I know I mentioned testing but I'm pretty sure it's totally different from professional testing practices. Can anyone shed light on what a software test engineer's day to day responsibilities are? They said they'll call me back for a screening and I want to be ready for it. Any tips?"

Study the techniques of Bob the Bastard in testing hardware. Apply analogous techniques to software. Software developers will fear and respect you, and tremble at the mention of your name.

Yes. Review the Anonymous Coward posts in this thread. Many of them were written by software test professionals who don't want to speak frankly where their employers or others can associate it with their name. Many AC comments here are very good.

Input testing. I imagine most testers have a love/hate relationship with it. It can be one of the most boring forms of testing as you throw in endless permutations of seemingly random data. But it also where you're most likely to discover the most satisfying kinds of bugs; ones that don't crash the software, but instead trick it into following the most absurd scenarios. Discovering that you can enter scientific notation in a field limited to 10 characters and create loans that cost more than the entire net worth of planet Earth? Oh yeah, that's the good stuff. (Bonus points for the developers though...no overflows!)
