Present personal preferenses are lots-of-buttons since if I have moved my hand away from the keyboard I can at least do something more than move the pointer. Sturdy feeling. Not too light so it doesn't move around by me accidentily looking at it. (I don't care about keyboard since it still works.)/OF"

The MX Revolution is very sturdy, has good range (for wireless), and has 8 buttons (not counting main scroll wheel). Add-ons to Logitech's SetPoint make setting button functions fairly easy as well.
Only drawback is it's designed for the right hand only.
