An anonymous reader writes "With 15+ years as a code monkey, mostly doing back-end systems design/development, I was surprised by recent developments at my workplace that has resulted in my being transitioned into a dual Architect/Managerial role within the next few weeks. While I am somewhat confident in my experience and training for being placed into an architect-type position at this point in my career, I have serious concerns with my being able to properly fulfill the role as manager with my current experiences. Aside from a "Become a manager in 2 days" type books, what resources would you recommend I look to for guidance as I move forward? As always, HELPFUL advice is always welcome."

  • I can only speak from my own experience, but I would say that you're really up against the 8 ball. To begin with you've a background in IT, which to me is almost unheard of in IT management. Secondly you seem to be concerned about how best to manage, & are also bothered by the fact that you may not be suited to management. All highly unusual character traits for those in management positions. Allow me to provide a brief picture of my current IT manager so that you can model yourself on him & remove
    • I agree with everything Anonymous Coward said. I'll also add that you need to remember the following: 1) You are responsible for all your employee's mistakes. You also now have the right to claim credit for everything they do right. That means if one of your staff takes it upon themselves to fix the copy machine you have the right to announce to HR that you have just saved the company hundreds of dollars in repair fees and deserve a raise.
