Jim R. Wilson writes "In past jobs, I've used Microsoft Outlook/Exchange, Novell Groupwise, and Google Calendar for handling business appointments. I'm sorry to say it, but I have yet to see a rival to Microsoft's scheduling features. On Slashdot, I have occasionally read rumblings that there are better, open source email and calendaring solutions out there. Can anyone substantiate this claim? What are the OSS alternatives? Can any compete with MS's resource scheduling?"

  • We use Scalix for our enterprise email server but still use outlook to interface with it. I haven't found anything that can replace outlook but I'm keeping my eye out.... Scalix has the functionality of exchange but not the cost. The server software is free and you only pay for the mailboxes and a yearly support fee. I was looking at upgrading our exchange server and it was going to be 80k to start with no support. I did the Scalix box for under 20k with support, plus I can install as many servers as I like
