Any suggestions for a meaningful wedding band? 3

mbutala writes "I am getting close to "popping the question," and have been raking my brains for an idea for a cool and unique wedding band. I've been thinking of contacting a company that can (possibly) fabricate a ring from pure Iridium (Ir) or a nearly pure alloy. It is the most corrosion resistive metal known — it cannot be dissolved in aqua regia like gold or platinum. Ir is extremely rare on Earth and the high concentration of Ir at the K-T boundary in the Earth's crust is what suggests a meteor took out the dinosaurs. I am positive that the symbolism of the permanence of Ir, the reminder that we are star-stuff, and the fact that the ring would be one-of-a-kind would really strike a chord with my gf. It's a really geeky idea, so I thought I would run it past you all — what do you think? Any other ideas? All comments are welcome — even those that suggest that asking for marital advice on Slashdot is about as smart as asking a teetotaler for the location of a good pub :)."

Any suggestions for a meaningful wedding band?

  • Who the heck cares what a bunch of random people think about your choice of wedding ring? What really matters is if you think it'll be meaningful between you and your girlfriend! And, I think you already know the answer to that.

One quick logistical question that I would run by the iridium company is whether it will be possible to resize the ring in the future (e.g., 20 years down the road if it needs to be resized due to changes in ring finger size). Your local jeweller won't be doing that for you.

  • When I got married I gave my wife a Platinum ring.
Looking back, after 4 years of hell, I should have given her one made of Polonium.

  • You could have a real mini-chip, surfaced with gold and wired and set into a ring, surrounded with tiny leds that the chip can turn on and off in patterns.
