From personal experience, it is possible to get a very good job in IT without any digree, but i can only speak from personal experience.
I started my career in the computer field back in 1997 (fresh out of highschool) as a programmer in a small company where all they wanted was knowledge of C. That job lead to another, which leat to another, which lead to a programming job in a fortune 500 company that lasted until 2004. That same year I decided to move to IT, and today i hold a rather senior position in
I'm working in IT without a degree, but with great passion and, now, long experience. Passion and experience are sometimes worth an interview (from HR point of view). If you still lacks experience you may have to do some practice or lower your meaning about "good job", "good position". Usually good things come with experience, practice and endurance:-)

"I read slashdot" is a good answer.
My HR also insists on a college degree but there have been exceptions for extraordinary people.
