XServers for Pivoting Monitors? 11

uno asks: "Hi, I'm wondering if there is an X-Server I can use for my pivoting monitor. I have had WinPortrait on my old Windows but now I would like to work on linux pivoting the monitor too. The platform is SuSe5.3 with KDE, ADI Microscan 17x monitor and an ATI Mach64. Any Hints?" Pivoting monitors! Man, I remember using these. They were neat!

Before you plug in your video input turn it 90 degrees...

Having two resolutions defined in XF86Config is not a solution. For one thing, the second definition doesn't match the monitor's geometry, and even if it did, the image would still be tilted 90 degrees.

You need to hack the X server to provide a tilted image.
  • If the pivoting monitor works the way I think it
might - translation: I'm guessing - then you could just program the desired resolution as an alternate in your XF86conf and switch between
the two with the keypad combo.

This isn't automatic, but it doesn't require programming, either.

  • It's a clever little monitor that is about the size of a legal pad, and pivots so that it can be vertical (8 1/2" long x 11" tall) or horizontal (11" long x 8 1/2" tall). Tall is great for working on documents, and long is great for spreadsheets.

Unfortunately, the Windows drivers for the WinPortrait don't even work that well; we ended up relegating the only one we had in the office to the computer of somebody who didn't upgrade to MS Win98 (where the drivers don't work at all), and didn't mind their computer crashing once in a while. If somebody can get the rotating working under X, I'd love to hear about it.

    What is a pivoting monitor?
  • Hi,

this will not work cause it will only change the resolution - I still have to pivot the screen 90 degrees clockwise... :-(

It's just a monitor you may turn around 90 degrees. If you work on portrait orientations it's more nice to work.
  • Do you remember the name of the HP UX Software?

Good idea. What would you pay for the banner? ;-))

Does anyone have any experience hacking on an X server?

Depending on where it fits on the trivialimpossible spectrum, I might be interested in giving it a shot.
  • Once I saw a software for X on a HP-UX which swaps the screen upside-down. With a simple modification the same software could rotate the image for 90 degrees:
changing the axis y to -y did the trick; changing the axis x to -y and y to x equivals to a 90 degree rotation.

I own a 15,1" pivoting TFT flat screen from Macom. It works great (price was about 1000US$ here in Italy)! I used the vertical screen mode under Win98, but it doesn't look as neat. The screen is not sharp, as the screen seems to be drawn vertically (the tiny transistors on screen have a vertical orientation, so drawing them vertically gives no sharp definition between pixels). As you may pivot the screen whit or without the software enabled image rotation, I think rotating the image may be done by software under X instead of using the hardware function to do so (doing it by sotware will result in sharper images).

    Just my considerations

If you think the system is working, ask someone who's waiting for a prompt.
