Here's a reasonable compromise that doesn't screw all customers out of rights, so naturally it almost never gets adopted:
Buy once = get the productWant updates? Support? = Pay as you go. Stop paying? You get to keep the product to the point where you stopped paying.
Unlike the variant used by ReSharper's creators: stop paying and your product reverts to the version you had when you started paying.
How about I stop paying and my product version stays the same as I just paid for?
