Purchased licenses with continuing security support. You wanna sell new features? Fine. You wanna sell security patches? You're worthless and should get out of software development. If you can't price in ongoing support, you don't belong in this industry. Go get a job coding for someone else who knows how the software business works.
So, you price in support, and find that nobody is buying your application because your competitor (who didn't price in support) is selling similar functionality for a third of the cost. You then can either reduce your price to compete, or go out of business -- either way, the end result is the same, nobody is pricing in support.
But there are plenty of customers who WILL pay for a useful well supported app even it's more expensive. You see it all the time in the comparison ratings and downloads stats.
If you're competing on price, you've already lost. You're making bottom barrel shit.
I don't know of anyone who sees the following options:
* free with ads
* $1.00
* $3.50
And chooses the $1 option. If you compete on price, you're competing with free. Find a new job.
