I doubt that he needs to mess a lot with a serial port emulator. This is mostly about DSP programming to get reliable and maintaineable code set that will allow them to develop the network functions and protocols that their clients are asking for quickly and efficiently.
It's just that their development environment is Linux based too. I suppose that they could have gone the cross compiler way...

If he's developing hardware solutions and they won't let him have the tools he needs to program it, then it's a shit place to work.
Sorry, no, serial port emulation isn't highly reliable or faithful.
IT can firewall his port if they're fearful but they need to support the company's business needs.
