You should go on unemployment, it's better income than work with the amount of money they put on top ($600/week). No reason to stay employed if the government just giving out UBI.
In a sensible country maybe. In extreme Capitalist pay for healthcare land you may want to keep your job since you life may depend on it for the insurance.

My company is at least offering to cover premiums while people are on LOA so that they don't lose coverage, but I know most companies aren't so magnanimous.

When you leave an employer you have 90 days to elect COBRA benefits. Yes, you pay the full cost, but benefits are retro-active. If you lose your job and 30 days later you are diagnosed with cancer, simply pay the back premiums and you are covered.
Losing coverage when you lose your job makes you eligible to sign up for healthcare on the exchange - it's called a "change of life event", much like having a child or getting married outside the open enrollment period.
