Cisco 605 Drivers For Linux? 6
parad1gm asks: "So I was an idiot and when offered my choice of a free Cisco 605 internal DSL modem or a $50 external 675 router, I opted for free. Now I cry nightly as I stop to swap out my Linux drive with my Windows 98 drive. If anyone has any word on drivers for the 605 drop me a line."

Regarding the "All PCI modems are WinModems" comment above...
Go read through the list of known modems on LinModems [linmodems.org] and find the line that says there are 3 PCI hardware modems in existence that work with Linux. I don't know them off the top of my head, but I know they are named in there.

This is pretty much the deal. Almost all PCI modems are winmodems. Save yourself a lot of time by looking at the paperwork for the card. If the modem does not feature error detection, then it is not a modem and will not work in Linux. A modem that will work in Linux will cost close to $100 and be on an ISA card.

I've had as many as 7 machines running on mine, with nary a glitch (after spending a few weeks earning the Cisco Broadband Operating System it is easy to configure.) It also allows you to route external port requests directly to an internal IP (or to a variety of IPs), giving you the ability (shhhh!) to offer different Interrnet services on discrete ports.
I'm sorry I can't offer any advice for the 605; the only one I configured had trouble running even on a Windows box. Hopefully somebody out there is busy reverse engineering the drivers for the *nixes.

Efficient Networks has told me that they will have linux drivers for all of their existing products by the end of the month. The Efficient 3060 ATM(DMT)ADSL Internal PCI Modem retails for around $199.
After speaking with their VP at my office one day, they have informed me of their strong commitment to supporting an OS like linux, and someone mentioned, "If you don't support Linux, you're crazy!" This is a far cry from my old bosses comment, "Even if I knew linux, I wouldn't put it on my resume."
