Netscape 6 And Win2K Web Viewing Problems? 9

freedom_surfer asks: "I recently set up a Windows 2000 network in a lab at my school. To make a long story short, my users and I are having problems accessing certain pages with Netscape 6 while logged in as a regular user. You can't access abcnews.com, you can't check your e-mail at Hotmail, and there are other numerous pages abroad and here at school that don't seem to function properly under Netscape 6. Explorer on the other hand works fine on these pages. Now I suspect that it has to do with Win 2K security, but how eludes me. Any more information on this subject would be most helpful."

Netscape 6 and Win2K Web Viewing Problems?

  • Believe it or not, this happens for me when reading slashdot (on linux) with M18, mozilla nightlies, galeon, as well as konqueror.

When reading slashdot, I can always get through no matter which browser if I visit http://www.slashdot.org (notice the "www"), but always get a "Connection refused from http://slashdot.org" error when I try to leave off the hostname.

It does not give me problems if I use Netscape 4.75, or Netscape PR3 (at last count). If it's a bug, it's a really persistent (and easy to make?) error in handling redirects.

I've been meaning to investigate bugzilla about this, but It'd be nice to hear that I'm not hallucinating from somebody else.

  • I'm going to fire up M18-Win32 now...

Anyway, while that logs in, I'll rant....

I use NetPositive in BeOS, Opera in Windows, and Konqueror to (rarly) login to Hotmail, and Net+ and Opera both work without increased securty set (haven't tried Konq yet though...).

    /me looks at Mozilla

It seems to have worked perfectly (of course, I didn't try the increased security option at login... I'm going to logout and try that now...)

Yes, it also seems to work... I'm shocked, but I think Hotmail, yes, Micro$oft's Hotmail, works with 'alternate' browsers.

Expect an update at Hotmail soon ;)

  • After reading a comment mentioning an IIS server error, that got me thinking. Where did I see that before... YES! Windows NT 4 comes with Internet Explorer 2. When I tried to download a later one, www.microsoft.com gave me the same error, to the letter! (Their own products don't work with each other, sheesh)

Also, I tried viewing another webpage and instead of it I got their web hosting provider. I think it has something to do with the HTTP protocol and get request format. If there's an option in NS6 to turn off HTTP/1.1 requests, you could try that.
  • I'm running M18 and Win2k, and I got the same thing for abcnews.com.... The page cannot be found The page you are looking for might have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable. Please try the following: If you typed the page address in the Address bar, make sure that it is spelled correctly. Open the abcnews.go.com home page, and then look for links to the information you want. Click the Back button to try another link. • Has Anybody been able to log on to hotmail using Mozilla?

  • Hmmm... maybe in the early days they cookied me with settings that don't work on my browser. I'll have to hack around a bit. Thanks for the info.

  • I'm running Mozilla just fine as a power user, and Mozilla/Netscape has been classically clueless about mutliuser security even on Unix.

  • abcnews.com is forwarding you to another page. It does that for me in Linux. Just go to abcnews.go.com....that usually fixes it.
  • try installing this [iplanet.com]. i use m18 on my windows machine, but i'm pretty sure it works for any mozilla browser.

Kleeneness is next to Godelness.

Working...
