New Years Marathons 539

So for those of us who don't go "Out" for holidays and prefer sitting on our asses, the extended TV theme Marathon is something of a tradition. Besides obvious choices like watching all the Star Wars movies, what sorts of marathon tv endurance tests are people planning? Buffy, Angel, Twin Peaks, Iron Chef? What are you gonna do?

    • I recommend swallows. African swallows. They taste better.
    • ahh, beat me to it. i'm assembling the Ultimate Python Marathon(tm).

currently, it consists of: (drumroll, please)

every episode of flying circus (45 30-minute shows)
holy grail (special ed. dvd) + special features
life of brian (criterion dvd) + special features

      live at hollywood bowl
live at aspen (both from python! live dvd set)
the two lost german episodes (from above & "life of python" set)

      then, the python documentaries/interviews:
bbc on location (during holy grail filming)
      "the pythons" (on lob dvd)
      the 30-year anniversary bbc special
      probably some other misc. stuff

then, if we haven't run out of coffee, we can tackle the non-python, but python-related stuff:
fawlty towers (every episode on dvd + interviews)
jabberwocky (new dvd rerelease + special features)
john cleese's how to irritate people (dvd)

      THEN, if we haven't died:
      brazil (criterion 3-disc set)
      a fish called wanda
      fierce creatures

total running time is approaching fifty hours. sheer lunacy.
  • I, unfortunately, will be travelling most of today and tomorrow, so I won't get to see the Twilight Zone marathon on Sci Fi. So all of you need to watch it in honor of me.

What's cool is that instead of doing it strictly in order by episode, they're putting the "classics" on in prime time. Here are the lineups for both nights:

The prime-time lineup: Monday, 8 p.m., "Will the Real Martians Please Stand Up?"; 8:33, "To Serve Man"; 9:05, "The Dummy"; 9:36, "Eye of the Beholder"; 10:09, "The Howling Man."

    Tuesday, 8 p.m., "A Penny for Your Thoughts"; 8:33, "The Masks"; 9:06, "The Hitch-Hiker"; 9:37, "It's a Good Life"; 10:09, "The Midnight Sun."

Trivia: Two of the above-mentioned episodes were turned into Simpsons Treehouse of Horror segments - which ones? (Could be more than two, actually, but I know of two for sure.)
  • Going to meet up with friends and play network unreal tournament and wolfenstein while drinking beer & vodka. All as a scientific experiment to see how alcohol affects our ability to shoot things.
  • Yahoo has good TV listings. Amazing what they will marathon on New Years' Day:

    ESPN: World's Strongest Man competition
    TLC: Seeing is Believing
Comedy Channel: Whose Line Is It, Anyway?
    A&E: Magnum PI until 8 p.m., then Law & Order until 4 a.m.
Animal Channel: The Crocodile Hunter (starting at 5 p.m.)
    Sci-Fi Channel: The Twilight Zone
History Channel: History's Lost & Found

Since my ex has our son this New Years', and my other of unknown significance left town yesterday, I'll be at home on my a** looking for a good TV marathon.

Alias would be a good one (since I missed most of the episodes), and so would Trading Spaces. I've already had Buffy DVD marathon, so no luck there. That hiding yourself from the rest of society (like staying home on New Years Eve) does far more to brand you as a geek than being seen out in your plastic-framed glasses talking about the latest kernal release. True to a point but there's also something to be said for having the party at home.

You can invite a bunch of friends & have a place for all to sit & drink w/o the crowd of NYE at a bar.

You can get naked with said friends & have a big orgy.

You can consume illegal substances at your own leisure w/o fear of LEO's ruining your evening.

When it's all over, you can carpet the house with sleeping bags and no one has to risk driving whilst intoxicated.
    • by Byteme ( 6617 )
Actually, it has very little to do with geekdom for some... I think it is a great idea to hide from society on this day only. I get out quite a bit every other day of the year that this event just seems way too crowded and over hyped. Plus, I do not want to share the highway with a bunch of drunk morons (I think it is very uncool to get behind the wheel intoxicated, very high-school indeed). I must admit that TV is not the best choice for an alternative. My wife and I are having a sex marathon after having a nice dinner and drinks at home.

And if you are not into pickling your brain on this holiday, there are many other traditions [fathertimes.net] that you can check out.

(Try "Hunter-killer robots" sometime too. The results are enlightening.)

I personally own all the movies to date (Along with animated clerks, and a few View Askew comics), but I have yet to hit NJ to see the Jay and Silent Bob's Secret Stash [viewaskew.com], where basically any View Askew fan woule be in heaven.

There are fun things to do in all the titles as well (besides drink that is),

1.) In every movie there is a reference to Star Wars
2.) In every movie there is a reference to hockey
3.) And in every movie Silent Bob talks at least once.

Basically an all around wholesome time. Of course I've already synced the clock on my computer so I will know the INSTANT it is new years ... so that oughta be fun too :-)

  • Let's not forget that the greatest threat to Free Software, indeed to the entire computer industry as an open industry, is the entertainment industry, as represented by the RIAA, the MPAA, and others.

I don't watch much television anyway, but for New Years I'm making a point of leaving the damn thing off entirely. No movie rentals to put more money in the pockets of those who would like nothing more than to destroy my livlihood in order to protect their outdated cartel profit model. No TV period.

Indeed, the only DVD I've purchased since the DeCSS fiasco is Sporty's IFR course for (private) pilots, mainly because of its interactive test questionairs. At least that way my 3 year old, multi-regional player will get some use, and as I doubt very seriously Sporty's is a member of the MPAA I feel I can make the purchase in good conscience.

That having been said, I would encourage everyone to ignore slashdot's occasional promotion of Media Cartel Content (it still amazes me that the editors of slashdot either just don't get it, or just don't care), turn the TV off, go out, get drunk, maybe even meet a girl or two and wind up not sleeping alone. Remember, even if you're the quintissential nerd, she'll likely be too drunk to notice. Opportunity knocks.
