Looking for IBM 1401 software 15

vand writes "Do you have, or know anybody who has, any IBM 1401 "system" software? We're looking for Autocoder, Cobol, Fortran, RPG, ... tapes. Sort 7 would be nice to have, too. We'd much rather have the tapes' or decks' contents than have them physically."

    Try http://www.piercefuller.com/oldibm-shadow/

There's *some* software there. There's also some diagnostics stuff, a simular, and a manual.

Hit Google. I found references to 1401 software at quite a few places.
  • Check out http://simh.trailing-edge.com/ [trailing-edge.com] too. There's some 1401 stuff there, although probably not as useful as that in my previous post.
  • I'm not saying anything either way, just making a little point: you might be breaking the law -- piracy laws and shit. I remember a few years back, on the Apple Network Server mailing list, someone asked for if anyone had a copy of A/UX -- the argument being that it could not be purchased from apple any longer. The list admin posted a pissed off comment saying that this was completely off base and illegal and would not be permitted.

I thought his comments were stupid at the time, but the law will bend you over on this one. I wish I could find the post, but Apple took all posts older than two years offline. Chuq Von Rospach was the list admin at the time. This is just a little tidbit to be aware of.
    • amazing. You pointed out that someone might - just might - be breaking the law on slashdot, and you were moderated UP. There's a lot more ambiguity to this one than Slashdot's normal game of "States rule posession of $questoinable-software illegal - get your copy here.", so i guess its neccesary to question...

Incidentally, I found a copy of A/UX in .iso form on some random FTP server a few years back. It pretty much sucks -- too bad I noticed that ten years after the rest of the world.

    In my opinion.

Used to be that you could ask for the archival services branch, and they could reproduce all the old 1401, 1620, and 1130 software you could ever want.

Try news:alt.folklore.computers. Many old IBMers hanging out there, and you might find someone with an archive.
