I got this window with all these pop-ups and little windows moving around the screen. Screen distorting program for MacOS9 my ass. i bet it installed a bit of spyware while I was there as well.

Why does no one check what get submitted here? are there not people that get paid to do so? Is this why I have ads in my face all the time?

Don't waste your time. Every one of these sites suck. How is any of this art? I mean, come on, a 404 error in a big system font with a blinking square on the bottom...creative, perhaps, art - absolutely not. Deviant Art is more of a gallery. I think what the poster was getting at was sites that are art, not that contain art.

On a related note, Hell.com [hell.com] used to be one of the best 'Web as Art' sites out there, and it led into a whole rat's nest of other sites, all as snazzy as it. Unfortunately, it seems to have gone away.

It's interesting to look at sites like these -- I always feel like I've wandered into an issue of wired magazine, only with more movement and blink tags. Kind of post-modernist, avant garde

Your point? Art, insofar as it can be defined, is "the conscious use of skill and creative imagination especially in the production of aesthetic objects" [m-w.com]. While it's certainly subjective, I don't consider a urinal, a soup can, or a page of blinking gibberish to be aesthetic, and therefore, they are not art.

Ok, I know replying to one's one post is usually not good, but I felt it was worth it to give a warning about the turnofftheinternet url.

It requires popups to be enabled, and remember to use whatever the keyboard combination to close your browser or program window is, otherwise you can use ctrl-alt-delete to end the browser instance (it creates a full-screen window with no browser interface or window buttons visible after clicking on the button)

All joking aside, If we are talking Internet art (sites/computer/etc)

Couple sites I think have artistic value.

1. 3d modeling should count, and I really like skinshack [counter-strike.net] the 3dmodels people design for counterstrike. It is art after all, but its the downloads not the site. I liked weapon-hacks [weapon-hacks.com], the 3d work was amazing, but with CS sites going down, its not up anymore.

2. As a site that looks like art, Go-l.com [go-l.com] Looks kinda like apple.com, but the site is pure eye-candy, which is art in my eyes. (And the specs for the machines are eye-candy as well, geek think...)

jodi.org works fine in Mozilla, you just have popup windows completely banned. This is why I don't recommend banning all pop-up windows indiscriminantly -- many non-advertising sites still use them as a part of their basic design.

Every legitimate pop-up I've run into (ie zoom-ins for catalogs, image galleries, word definition pop-ups) has worked without error on both Moz & Opera with their normal pop-up blocking turned on.

Those are for pops that launch as a result of links that you click. Popups that launch automatically when you visit a site will be blocked, even if they are a "ligitimate" part of the website's design (and not an ad). An example of this is my banking site uses such an automatic popup to broadcast notices. There are other sites that use this for purposes other than ads of course--you just don't know it because you never see them.

Some paintings made in Europe in the 19th century are still copyrighted in Europe because not only does Europe have a copyright term of life plus 70 years, but some nations also tack on extra extensions for pre-WWI and pre-WWII works.
