What Do You Do When Windows Dies? 3

Insanity asks: "Anyone ever come in to work and theres the boss, laptop in hand, with a crashed out windows install? Ive seen this case to many times to count and the normal answer that is thrown back is 'Reformat'. Thats an option nobody likes so instead we spend hours and hours trying to repair it. What steps do other Slashdot readers take when they see things like 'NTLDR Missing or corrupt' or 'HAL.dll Missing or Corrupt'?" Are there things one can do to recover from situations when Windows won't load, or is the traditional wisdom of 'reformat and reinstall' the best one can do?
