HDTV capable Video Cards?

HaeMaker asks: "I am wondering if there are any hardware vendors working on video cards capable of producing the odd resolutions in the HDTV format (like 1080x1920!). I just got a 65" HDTV and would love to hook a PC up to it and get better than NTSC standard analog."

Go back and look at the resolution he was asking about. It 1080X1920. While I cannot speak to the 1920 number, I do know that one of the HDTV formats is 1080i, where the i refers to interlace. This is 1080 lines. I would guess the 1920 number is not unreasonable, particularly in view of the fact that the screen has a different aspect ratio than most all current computer monitors available. Basically, what he wants to do is use his new HDTV screen as a display device for his computer. If I had bought one, so would I!

He was not concerned with being able to receive HDTV signals. At least he didn't mention that in his post. What he wanted to know was if someone manufactures a video card that will allow him to use his HDTV display as a display device for his computer. I am curious about this as well. I've seen a wide screen display on a Sun box, and it looked good!. But that was using an SBus video adapter. Now that Sun is starting to make machines with PCI buses, they may come out with a video adapter for this wide screen display that is PCI based.

what you can do for the time being

if you have a video card that has video out you can slide by with 640X480 or possibly 800X600
on your hdtv ... how this may look is questionable as i have yet to be able to try this ... a good card would be the matrox g400 max
or the spectra 2500 (dont know if the 5400 will do the following ) as if i am not mistaken both will allow you to boot to the tv without a monitor. as far as the max res though no video card that i am aware off has these features ... nvidia is supposedly working on one but it is months off.

Res? Yes. Format? I doubt it.

Well, plenty of video cards are capable of that resolutions (I'm running a Matrox G200 at 1920x1080 right now on a 21" monitor.) Unfortunately, I don't know of any that support the DTV signal (which is directly digital, and very high bandwidth.)

I saw a review of a (not yet released) video card that will have DTV out at HDTV resolutions, but I don't remember where. Try searching on /.
