What Happened To IBM's SASH? 3

sergio asks: "I was discusing with friends about application frameworks and other things when I mentioned that there was something in Alphaworks that looked promising and I remembered it was on its way to be quite portable. I was talking about the SASH tool and the Webications concept (see http://sash.alphaworks.ibm.com/ ). I recently looked in their web site and I see the typical Windoze only shpeel and the 'licence me' approach that has killed so many ideas before. Does anybody know what has IBM in the works for this application? It seems like it would be nice way of building distributted front ends for apps beyond what a browser would provide."

What Happened To IBM's SASH?

  • D*mn. Someone mod down the above post -- I didn't realize how advanced Sash had become since last year. Sorry, IBM + Gnome...

SashXB for Linux [ibm.com] is a LGPL-licensed project that uses Gnome and Mozilla (my guess was right there). It's becoming real, apparently.

Ok..time to give Sash another run around the block.

  • and you will see a link to a source release for Sash for Linux: http://oss.software.ibm.com/developerworks/opensou rce/sashxb/
    1. Lotus Notes Client is excellent to convince managers to let people use an alternative to Windows (I had this problem 2 years ago with a Fortune100 company).
    2. This and StarOffice confirm that Linux slowly gain acceptance as a desktop OS.
    3. LGPL is not bad in this case as IBM is a serious brand.
    4. Choosing Gnome is not a bad point though I hope WDE will be uasable under other environments, though.
    5. Now, I just want to see how clean the generated code is but until then: Two Thumbs Up, IBM [goatse.cx]!
