Taskmaster: It's a UK show, but all the full episodes are on Youtube. Humor is what we need right now.

  • "The Boys": super dark and explores "what if the 'good' superheroes were a bunch of cynical assholes"

"The Last Kingdom": decent historic fantasy

"You": real creepy love story / drama

"The Haunting of Hill House": well done single season horror show

    • +1 on The Boys. The past several years have been around making super heroes 'darker' but really that just meant brooding, complicated etc. The Boys does a good job with the idea that super heroes would be affected by the same hubris and personality defects that afflicts celebrities and others who are 'adored' by the masses. In my mind it's a good reflection of how politicians and corporate leaders who get this and wield power turn bad.

Also Elisabeth Shue is in it.

    • I love the boys. It is very now about superheroâ(TM)s. Good Omens was hilarious. I just finished Russian Doll which was better than I expected. If you havenâ(TM)t bing Santa Clarita do it now.

    • It would work well for movies as well. It would have stopped me from watching some really bad movies as overtime we have 2020 vision on how well such a movie aged.

Toy Story 1 The CGI is outdated but the movie looks good. And the story kept my interest.
Star Wars Episode II attach of the clones. More modern CGI but looks like crap (The movie was rough to go threw, like sand it sucked everywhere)

    • This is forced on us now. Playing Detroit:Become Human, a game released 2 years ago as a PS4 exclusive which finally came to PC only to be an exclusive at the bloody Epic games store (because they insisted about bringing the worst feature of consoles to PC). Anyway thankfully on April the exclusivity to Fortnite store ended and I finally got to enjoy the game 2 years after release.

The She-Ra reboot was really well done and surprisingly fun. The plot was good, the characters were funny, and the character development was also great. I recently watched "Warrior Nun" and "The Old Guard"" but both of those felt a bit derivative. In terms of non-fiction, I've been binging on Grady Hillhouse's Practical Engineering youtube channel https://www.youtube.com/user/gradyhillhouse [youtube.com] which has been really educational. I'm not an engineer, but I've always had some level of interest in the topic, and he does a really good job of explaining things, and makes it really clear how incredibly tough actual engineering is.
    • I have found that these new Reboots from Netflix such as She-Ra and Vol-tron are well done. While doing homage to the 1980's show but updated to modern sensibilities and created a better story arch.

While yea we will get some people having a fit because there may be more diversity or every character model isn't a copy and paste from a supermodel with different hair

There is a restored copy of Ulysses 31 on YouTube and it holds up quite well.

    • by cusco ( 717999 )

Never watched She-Ra (new or old version), but I'm pleasantly surprised to be enjoying 'Warrior Nun'.

The new season of 'The Protector' is as bad as Season 3 was, if my wife wasn't watching it I wouldn't bother.

We don't normally watch TV during the day at all, but Rosa has started turning the 'Moving Art' series on Sunday mornings while I'm making breakfast, and we watch a couple of episodes before walking the dogs. Really a pleasant and relaxing way to start the day.

Both good reads about fictional personas.

Latest movie I really liked is Ready Player One, latest series I watched are Downtown Abbey, The Witcher, and The Watchmen.I must say The Watchmen serie is a masterpiece, I liked the comics last century, loved the movie, and love the serie.

    • If you really liked the Ready Player One movie, you'd like the book even better. They sort of had to ruin the movie, because otherwise they'd have to license so much old IP that it would have doubled or tripled the cost of the movie. The nostalgia factor is a bit off when they had to leave out so much.

I have three little kids. I haven't watched an adult TV show in 8 years. Or slept. Or bathed in the last 5 days. Or brushed my teeth in several. Ugh.

    • I hear ya. Lots of PJ Masks for me. They recently started to watch My Little Pony, which isn't bad. Lot's of Anime influence.

When we don't watch something that's exclusively for kids, we find ourselves watching a lot of HGTV and Food Network as it's mostly child appropriate.
    • Phineas and Ferb on Disney+ is *outstanding* It's actually enjoyable by adults. It's creative team worked on early Simpsons and Family Guy episodes, and Rocko's Modern Life.

Also great, also on Disney+, is Gravity Falls. Total cult show, it's X-Files for kids, with a perfect, cohesive two-season story arc. Heck, as a story, it was executed light-years better than the X-Files, which didn't know where to go after a few seasons. My kids don't read comic books, but they demanded the graphic novels when the show

I so hear you. We were doing fine with our one kid, but then just after we settled into the lockdown, DCF called and gave us two more (we're foster parents). Now my wife is essentially a full-time teacher, and our house is full of chaos.

One of the first things we did was sign up for Disney+. Unfortunately the Marvel movies and Star Wars shows aren't appropriate for the kids, but we managed to watch the Mandalorian after the kids were asleep.

Some of the Studio Ghibli stuff can go young (Totoro?)

          Thanks.

Kipo look fascinating, and I've been thinking of doing some of the Ghibli stuff. We really try to keep the TV time to a minimum, much as it's tempting to put something on and leave them watching it while we enjoy some peace and quiet in another room.

  • The original Twilight Zone series, "The Old Man in the Cave" (S5E7).

One I'd like to track down but recall far too little about is a live play that ran on NET/PBS probably in the 1960's about a future society in which everyone worked from home on some sort of terminals. It would be interesting to compare its take with where we are now.

Depending on where you are in the world it's either Norsemen or Vikingane. It's an historical parody somewhat in the vein of Vikings or The Last Kingdom, except populated by lovable idiots with the odd moment of idiot savant level brilliance. Hilariously well acted with serious subtexts and super dry humor punctuated here or there with outright stupidity.

If you're into game shows, there's "Don't" and "Ultimate Tag."

"Ultimate Tag" is what you'd think. Tag in an arena with amateurs going up against professionals. There's some truly brutal aspects of the game for what's essentially a flag football spin on tag. They sometimes only show highlights from a competition, but it's still a fun show to watch.

"Don't" is Adam Scott hosting a show where you win money for "not" doing things. As narrated by Deadpool. Or Ryan Reynolds. As if there's a difference. The narration makes the show even when the challenges aren't great. Though there are some terrific and funny challenges too. My favorite is "Don't Drink." They have the contestant eat progressively hotter food items and offer them progressively cooler drinks. Oh, and they're under a heat lamp the whole time. Another favorite is "Don't Move." Standing behind a plexiglass shield with a helmet covered in needles poking into balloons. Then Adam Scott uses a sling to toss various items at your face. Like a whole ham. Or a watermelon. All while Reynolds drying comments about how the family is going to need therapy after this, or somebody's going to need a timeout. Or some type of narrated product placement.

Anyone in tech in the 1980s would know how terrifying a dozen IBM lawyers paying you a visit would be. It captures the look and feel of the early 80s and ends in the early 90s with the birth of the web and search engines. The story is more about the people though and how connections are made.

  • If you haven't seen it, you should watch it. On Netflix.

  • I'm a sucker for Margaret Atwood's wordsmithing: such a great writer to start with. I'm about halfway through the series now. They've added more material in, but Margaret is a consulting producer and it's all consistent with the book. Scary, excellent series during these times.

The Crown: I'm waiting for the next season to show up. If you've enjoyed the recent movies on British royalty, you'll probably love this.

Maybe they got better, but the first series just bored me.

  • Very good character driven sci fi with interesting, consistent and logical time travel.

  • ... very calming. Highly recommended as a videogame if you're stressed out. You can travel the milkyway and most players are pretty laid back. Many don't fight that much, just go exploring. Runs on all platforms and the legendary edition comes at 20 Euros or something.

    • Agree with this. I just got back into Elite after over coming my rocket league addiction. Elite has definitely not just held its own, its got better in the intervening years - fighters and multi-crew are both awesome additions. The only reason I fell out of it before is just because you need to devote some time to it - you can't drop in for 20 minutes.

Now I have a better PC/bigger monitor, but it works well enough on a standard PS4 controller that it never feels worth the extra effort to hook the HOTAS back up to the PC. Especially since you can't carry over your character between systems.

I also greatly enjoyed The Return of the Obra Dinn.

I in high-school in a shit hole town without Fox when the show premiered, and I had a job when the shit-hole got Fox. I graduated and had a full-time job later, so I really never watched it when it was current other than a couple of random episodes by happenstance. I'm very slow to get through it now, I pretty much have to watch it alone, which is difficult as a father of three, my wife doesn't want the little ones anywhere near when it's on and she hates it, so it's basically when she's out of town visiting people while I'm working, or some other rare occasion that I get to catch up.

My review - it's cheesier than I expected. I expected some cheese, but not such a thick layer. It sets up to take itself seriously, then they do something goofy like they did with the roach episode where they made it look like a roach crawled across the TV screen. They seem to do a pretty good job developing characters, then they occasionally devote and episode to going out of character, like getting a tattoo and banging a stranger - or a vampire. Skinner is married to a succubus in the cannon of the show - that needs to be revisited - it might be and I haven't gotten there yet, or they may have just dropped it.

Also - R. Lee Ermey makes a guest appearance - GOOD, awesome, love that guy!
They kill him off in the pre-opener scene. Seriously? You totally could have dedicated an episode to this guy, he needed more lines!

Also, I'm in season three or four right now. Seriously -Sculley can drop some of the skepticism now. You've been pregnant with alien offspring, had a chip implanted, lost time, met with all sorts of ghost, goblins, and demons - it's about time you believe in some of your first hand experiences, leaving her cautiously skeptical would be fine, but after humping an X-File personally she should be a little more open to believing some of this crap.

I've been playing Quake 4, Halo (Reach, 1,2), Battlezone Redux (both BZ1 and TRO), XIII and others. It's been good to learn, and sometimes relive, them.

Also, there's drugs, and political theory, personality traits that each have their own unique voice, and the visuals and soundtrack are pretty great too.
